Permit Types and Costs
Single Trip Permits
Official ADOT Permit Fees:
- Class A Overdimensional Permit: $15
- Class A Overweight Permit: $75
Associated Fees:
- Motor carrier fee (over 50 miles): $48 per trip
- Motor carrier fee (50 miles or fewer): $12 per trip
- Use fuel fee (over 50 miles): $65 per trip
- Use fuel fee (50 miles or fewer): $16 per trip
Annual Permits
Note: Annual permit fees vary by source. Confirm with ADOT:
- Oversize annual: Estimated $360-$1,500
- Oversize/overweight annual: Estimated $600-$1,500

Escort Vehicle Requirements
When Escorts Are Required
Over Width
- 11' to 14' wide: 1 rear pilot car or escort vehicle required
- 14'1" to 16' wide: Front AND rear pilot car/escort vehicle required
Over Height
- Over 15' high: May require pilot car with height pole
- Over 16' high: 1 front escort OR 1 rear escort required
Over Length
- 120' or more: 1 escort required
Overhang
- Front or Rear overhang over 20': 1 escort pilot car required
Multiple Vehicle Movements
- Two or more oversize/overweight permitted vehicles traveling together: At least one escort vehicle per load required
Escort Vehicle Specifications
- Must be properly equipped per Arizona regulations
- Must meet equipment standards in Title 17, Chapter 6 of Arizona Administrative Code
Operating Times
Standard Hours
- Daylight hours only: 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Night and Weekend Travel (Limited Conditions)
Loads not exceeding:
- 16' wide
- 16' high
- 120' long
- 250,000 lbs
May travel:
- Interstate and specified state routes at night
- 3:00 AM to 12:00 noon on weekends
Holiday Restrictions
No travel allowed on:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Certification Requirements
- Arizona requires P/EVO (Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator) certification
- Must complete certification course and testing
- Required for all escort vehicle operators
Penalties and Fines
Fine Range
Oversize and overweight violations:
- Starting fine: $100
- Maximum fine: Over $1,400
- Depends on: Amount exceeding maximum legal weight and number of offenses within the same year
Legal Classification
First violation:
- Civil penalty under ARS 28-5438
Second violation (within 6 months):
- Class 3 misdemeanor for violating section 28-1099 or 28-1100
Second conviction (within one year):
- Class 2 misdemeanor for violating section 28-1099 or 28-1100
