Permit Types and Costs
Single Trip Permit
- Valid for: One, one-way round trip movement of oversized or overweight vehicles
- Validity: Specific date, time, vehicle, and route designated in the permit only
- Cost: Contact district offices for specific fees
Continuous Operation Permit
- Duration: Not more than one year
- Maximum dimensions:
- Width: Less than 12 feet
- Overall length: 70 feet or less
- Cost (Less than 1.35 times allowable load): $10
Annual Permits
- Duration: Valid for 1 year
- Cost: Contact district offices for specific fees
Note: Excessive loads (in size and/or weight) may require further departmental review which may take up to a minimum of three weeks.

When Escorts Are Required
Over Width
- All movements exceeding 12' wide: Escorts required
- Over 10' wide in mountains or winding coastal areas: Escorts required
- Over 12' wide: 1 lead escort required
- Over 14' wide: 2 escorts required

Vehicle Requirements
- Passenger car, OR
- Two-axle truck with rated capacity not exceeding 20,000 lbs gross weight
Communications
- Two-way radios required
- Continuous communication between units must be maintained
Lighting
- At least one rotating or oscillating amber light mounted on top of cab
- Visibility: Sufficient intensity to be visible at 500 feet in normal sunlight
Signs
For all vehicles over 12' wide:
- Sign text: "WIDE LOAD"
- Background: Yellow
- Letters: Black, 10 inches high
- Sign dimensions: 6 feet x 1 foot
Operating Times
Peak Hour Restrictions
NO MOVEMENT allowed on state highways during:
- Morning peak: 5:00 AM - 8:30 AM
- Afternoon peak: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Allowed travel windows:
- 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (daytime window)
- After 6:00 PM and before 5:00 AM (if specifically permitted)
