Maximum Permit Dimensions (Routine Permits)

  • Width: 16' (exceeding requires Super Load)

  • Length: 110' on 2-lane roads, 115' on 4-lane roads (exceeding requires Super Load)

Maximum Permit Weights (Route-Dependent)

  • Single axle: 22,000-33,000 lbs (depending on route classification)
  • Tandem axle: 38,500-56,000 lbs (depending on route classification)
  • Tridem axle: 48,000-70,500 lbs (depending on route classification)
  • Steer axle: 600 lbs per inch of tread width (13,200 lbs for 11" tires)

When Escorts Are Required

Over Width - Two-Lane Highways

  • Over 12' wide: 1 escort
  • Over 14' wide: 2 escorts
  • Over 16' wide: May require 3 escorts

Over Width - Interstate System

  • Over 15' wide: 1 escort
  • Over 16' wide: May require 2 or 3 escorts

Over Height

  • Over 16' high: 1 escort

Over Length - Two-Lane Highways

  • Over 100' long: 1 escort

Over Length - Interstate System

  • Over 120' long: 1 escort

Overhang

  • Over 25' rear overhang: 1 escort

Escort Vehicle Specifications

Vehicle Requirements

  • Passenger cars, trucks, or vehicles authorized by Special Permit Office
  • Maximum 16,000 lbs

Signs

  • "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign displayed on roof line
  • Dimensions: Minimum 12" high x 5' wide
  • Letters: 8" high with 1" stroke width
  • Colors: Black letters on yellow background

Communications

  • Two-way radio equipment required
  • Must be FCC-licensed
  • Must provide adequate communication at 1/2 mile separation
  • Required on both towing unit and pilot/escort vehicles

Operating Times

Standard Hours (Majority of Routes)

  • 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
  • Including Saturdays and Sundays

24/7 Travel Allowed (Majority of Routes)

Loads up to and including:

  • 10' wide

  • With lighting as specified on permit
