Illinois OSOW Regulations (IDOT)

  • Width: 8'6"
  • Height: 13'6"
  • Length: 65' overall
  • Gross vehicle weight: 80,000 lbs maximum
  • Single axle: 20,000 lbs maximum
  • Tandem axle: 34,000 lbs maximum
  • Tridem axle: 42,500 lbs maximum

Scale Tolerance

Permitted vehicles are allowed scale tolerance:

  • Single axle: Up to 2,000 lbs above permitted limits
  • Tandem axle: Up to 3,000 lbs above permitted limits
  • Gross weight: Up to 5,000 lbs above permitted limits

Permit Types and Costs

Single-Trip Oversize Permits

Fee structure based on load dimensions and distance:

For loads not exceeding 70' length, 10' width, 14'6" height:

  • Up to 90 miles: $12
  • 91 to 180 miles: $15
  • 181 to 270 miles: $18
  • Over 270 miles: $21

For loads not exceeding 85' length, 12' width, 14'6" height:

  • Up to 90 miles: $15
  • 91 to 180 miles: $20
  • 181 to 270 miles: $25
  • Over 270 miles: Higher fees apply (contact IDOT)

Annual Permits

Limited Continuous Operation Permit:

  • Cost: $1,000
  • Maximum length: Up to 115 feet

Payment Convenience Fees

  • Credit/Debit card: 2.25% of total amount due (minimum $1.00)
  • E-Check: $0.75 per transaction

Routine Issue Maximum Dimensions

  • Width: 14'6" maximum
  • Height: 15' maximum (depending on overhead clearances)
  • Length: 145' maximum

Cook County Expressway Restrictions

  • Maximum weight: 120,000 lbs
  • Maximum width: 12'
  • Maximum height: 13'6"

Requires Engineering Investigation

  • Over 16' wide
  • Over 17' high
  • Field or district engineering review required

Escort Vehicle Requirements

General Rule

  • Loads exceeding any two dimensions: Two escorts required

Height Requirements

  • Over 14'6" high: Pole for measuring vertical clearances must be mounted on escort vehicle leading the load

Width Requirements

  • Over 12' wide: Escort vehicle must be equipped with lights

Escort Positioning

  • Two-lane highways: Escort travels approximately 300 feet in front of load
  • Multilane highways (rural areas): Escort travels approximately 300 feet to rear of load

Escort Driver Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years or over

Transport Vehicle Requirements

Signs

  • "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs required for:
    • Vehicles/loads over 10' wide
    • Vehicles/loads over 14'6" high
    • Vehicles/loads over 75' long

Flags

  • Red flags required
  • Minimum size: 18" square
  • Placement: Extremities of all oversize vehicles, vehicle combinations or loads, and all protruding objects
  • Must be clean

Lights

  • All loads must display operable oscillating, rotating, or flashing amber light(s) when moving under oversize/overweight permit authority

Operating Times

Loads ≤12' wide, 13'6" high, 200' long

  • Authorized: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Requirement: One additional civilian escort when traveling during hours of darkness

Loads ≤14'6" wide, 15' high, 200' long

  • Authorized: 1/2 hour before sunrise until 1/2 hour after sunset, 7 days a week
  • Authorized: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Special Weekend Restrictions

  • Notable: Illinois prohibits weekend oversize travel for certain load dimensions
  • Check permit for specific restrictions

Penalties and Fines

Refusing to Submit to Weighing

Fine range:

  • Minimum: $500
  • Maximum: $2,000

Violation: Any person who refuses or fails to stop and submit their vehicle and load after being directed to do so, or who removes any portion of the load prior to weighing

Overweight Fines

First 2,000 lbs overweight:

  • Fine: $73

Over 5,000 lbs overweight:

  • Formula: $1,500 for the first 5,000 lbs over, plus $150 for each additional 500 lbs (or fraction thereof)

Repeat Offenders

4 or more overweight convictions within 12 months:

  • Additional penalty: $5,000 added to each fourth and subsequent offense (on top of standard fines)

Permit Violations

Excess weight beyond permit limits:

  • Violation: Operating with gross, tandem, or single axle weights in excess of those permitted
  • Penalty: Fine for excess weight in addition to permit violation charge
