Maximum Permit Dimensions

  • Width: 16' maximum
  • Height: 18' maximum (depends on clearances; over 17' requires notification of utilities before movement)
  • Length: 125' maximum

Permit Types

Overdimension Superload Permit

  • For loads exceeding: 150,000 lbs gross weight
  • Minimum processing time: 3 days between submittal and issuance
  • Required: Bridge analysis and review for every superload

Escort Vehicle Requirements

When Escorts Are Required

Superloads & Large Structures

  • At least 1 front escort (pilot car) AND 1 rear escort (pilot car) required

Over Width (Over 14' wide)

On highways with fewer than 4 lanes:

  • Front and rear escorts required
  • Alternative: Rear escort may be eliminated if warning light attached to:
    • Top of towing vehicle
    • Rear of each load
    • Mounted 2-8 feet above road surface

Over Height

  • Over 18' high: 1 escort with height pole

Escort Vehicle Equipment

  • Warning lights must be installed on top of each escort vehicle

Transport Vehicle Requirements

Signs

  • "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs required for all loads moving under permit

Flags

  • Color: Red
  • Placement:
    • Each side of widest part of wide load
    • Rear of all overlength loads

Operating Times

  • 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
  • 7 days a week including holidays

Overweight Only

  • No restrictions: Continuous travel allowed
