  • Width: 8'6"
  • Height: 13'6"
  • Length: 53' (semitrailers)
  • Gross vehicle weight: 80,000 lbs
  • Single axle: 20,000 lbs
  • Tandem axle: 34,000 lbs

Escort Vehicle Requirements

When Escorts Are Required

Over Width

  • Over 13' wide: 1 escort required (all highways)
    • Exception: Manufactured housing units
  • 16' wide or more: Police escort required

Over Height

  • 14'6" or more: 1 escort with height pole required

Over Weight

Over 75 tons gross weight: Police escort required

Over 120,000 lbs:

  • 1 escort AND 1 Police escort required on entire route
  • If any part of route is on non-Interstate highways

Over 130,000 lbs:

  • 2 escorts AND 1 Police escort required
  • Required even on Interstate-only routes

Electronic Permits

  • Maryland accepts electronic permits
  • Valid on smartphones or tablets
  • No minimum screen size requirement
