Escort Vehicle Requirements
When Escorts Are Required
Over Width
- Over 13' wide: 1 escort required (all highways)
- Exception: Manufactured housing units
- 16' wide or more: Police escort required
Over Height
- 14'6" or more: 1 escort with height pole required
Over Weight
Over 75 tons gross weight: Police escort required
Over 120,000 lbs:
- 1 escort AND 1 Police escort required on entire route
- If any part of route is on non-Interstate highways
Over 130,000 lbs:
- 2 escorts AND 1 Police escort required
- Required even on Interstate-only routes
Electronic Permits
- Maryland accepts electronic permits
- Valid on smartphones or tablets
- No minimum screen size requirement
