Superloads exceed:

• 16' wide, OR
• 16' high, OR
• 150' long, OR
• 160,000 lbs gross weight

Recent Regulation Updates (Effective March 31, 2025)

• New escort threshold for overlength loads: Now exceeding 110'
• New escort requirements for loads exceeding 125' on all highways

Escort Vehicle Requirements

When Escorts Are Required

Over Width (No escort required up to 12'4" wide)

12'6" to 14' wide:

• Interstates and designated highways (dual-lane divided or multi-lane): 1 rear escort
• Off interstate and designated routes: 2 escorts (front and rear)

Over Length

• Over 90' on all highways except divided highways: Rear escort required
• Over 125' on all highways (as of March 31, 2025): Escort requirements apply

Over Height

• Over 15'6" on divided highways: Route survey AND 1 escort with high pole required

Communications

• Two-way radios required in power unit and all escort vehicles

Transport Vehicle Requirements

Signage

"OVERSIZE/WIDE LOAD" signs required for:

• Loads wider than 10'6" (front)
• Single units longer than 50' (rear banner)
• Combinations longer than 90' (rear banner)

Sign specifications:

• Minimum 7' long x 18" high
• Black letters on yellow background

Permitting System

• MoDOT Carrier Express: Online service for permit applications
• Applications accepted online only
• Permit validity: 7 days

Operating Times

Standard Hours

• 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset

• Branson area
• Kansas City area
• St. Louis area

Holiday Restrictions

No travel allowed on:

• New Year's Day
• Memorial Day
• Independence Day
