Escort Vehicle Requirements

When Escorts Are Required

Escort Positioning

  • When one pilot vehicle required: Must travel in front of oversize unit

Pilot Vehicle Distance

  • Rural highways: Maintain distance of 300-500 feet ahead or behind movement

Over Length

  • Over 95': 1 escort pilot car
  • Over 120': 2 escort pilot cars
  • Over 120' on two-lane highways: Rear escort required
  • Over 140': As specified by permit

Over Height

  • Over 14'6": Front escort needed (depends on route and load)

Over Width

  • Width requirements vary by route
  • Oregon uses color-coded route system for width requirements

Operating Times

Standard Hours (Labor Day to Memorial Day)

  • 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
  • 7 days a week

Summer Restrictions (Memorial Day to Labor Day)

  • No travel starting noon on Saturday
  • No travel all day Sunday
