Escort Vehicle Requirements
When Escorts Are Required
Over Width
- Over 14' wide: 1 escort required
- Extreme widths: Additional escorts may be required by Highway Patrol
Overhang
- Rear overhang 25' or more: Escorts required for all highways
Mixed Highway Types
- Interstate and two-lane highways in same route:
- 1 escort for Interstate portions
- 2 escorts for two-lane highway portions
Escort Vehicle Equipment Requirements
Safety Equipment
- Emergency triangles
- Extra "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs and flags
- Fire extinguisher: Minimum 5 lb capacity with BC rating (multi-use), OR 10 lb BC rating for hazmat loads
Communications
- Two-way radios required
- Must be capable of transmitting and receiving at all times
- Important: Cellular or satellite telephones do NOT meet this requirement
- Required on both escorted movement and escort vehicles
Operating Times
Standard Hours
- Daylight hours: 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
- 7 days a week
